History of the Valor Site
The Valor Acres site is well-known among residents as the former location of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs hospital. The name “Valor Acres,” with its initials V.A., was chosen intentionally to honor this history. Originally built in 1938, the hospital was crucial in meeting the increasing demand for veteran care following World War II. According to Cleveland Historical, the designers of the hospital incorporated the surrounding natural environment to benefit the patients—an enduring principle also reflected in the design of the current Valor Acres.
A significant landmark, the still-standing boiler stack, commemorates the Brecksville campus of the Louis Stokes Cleveland Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VA Hospital), which operated on this site from 1961 to 2011. The VA Hospital was decommissioned, and the land was transferred to the city of Brecksville in 2018. Valor Acres, now occupying this land, is named in tribute to the VA Hospital’s administration, medical and non-medical staff, firefighters, police officers, and volunteers. It honors the milestones and achievements within its walls and the military service members and veterans who served or currently serve our country with honor and valor.
